How to Remove Common Stains from a Fabric Sofa in Pakistan

Golden rule: blot, don’t rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into fibres. Always blot from the outside edge inward.

Chai / tea spills

Blot immediately with a dry cloth. Mix one teaspoon of dish soap with one cup of cold water. Apply, blot, then rinse by blotting with clean water. Do not use hot water — it permanently sets the tannins.

Food stains (curry, oil, sauce)

Scrape off solid matter first. For oil-based stains, sprinkle baking soda and leave 15 minutes to absorb the oil. Vacuum off, then spot clean with dish soap and cold water.

Blood

Cold water only — hot water permanently sets blood. Apply a paste of cornstarch and cold water, leave 30 minutes, scrape off, repeat if needed.

• Leave 2–3 inches of air gap behind the sofa — don’t push it against walls with poor ventilation.
• If you smell mustiness, expose cushions to brief indirect sunlight to kill surface mould.

Sun protection

• Direct sunlight fades fabric within 6–12 months even in quality materials. Position sofas away from west-facing windows.
• Use curtains, blinds, or UV-filtering window film on windows that get 2+ hours of direct sun daily.
• If sunning cushions to freshen them, 20–30 minutes in indirect light is enough. Extended direct sun dries out foam.

Velvet Sofa Care — Special Instructions

• Never rub velvet against the pile direction. Always brush with the natural lie of the fibres.
• Steam, don’t wet: A garment steamer held 6 inches from the surface refreshes velvet pile better than any wet cleaning method.
• Flattened velvet: Hold a steam iron close to the surface (without touching), brush the pile upright while steam is rising. This restores the nap.
• Avoid water marks — if spot cleaning is necessary, use minimum liquid and allow to dry fully before brushing the pile back up.

Leather Sofa Care in Pakistan

• Wipe weekly with a slightly damp microfibre cloth.
• Condition every 6 months with a leather conditioner — Pakistan’s dry winters can crack unprotected leather.
• Keep away from direct heat — heaters, direct sunlight, and AC vents all dry leather out.
